In structural engineering, the concrete foundation is never perfectly flat. When erecting massive steel columns, heavy machinery, or pump skids, the steel base plate rests on leveling nuts. This leaves a 1-to-3 inch gap between the steel and the concrete. If left empty, the steel bolts would buckle under the weight. Non-shrink structural grout is pumped into this gap to cure into a rock-hard layer that transfers thousands of tons of pressure evenly into the foundation.

Because structural grout contains expansive additives and high-strength Portland cement, it is wildly expensive. While you might pay $150 for an entire cubic yard of standard concrete, a single 50lb bag of specialized non-shrink grout can cost $35—which works out to over $2,100 per cubic yard! Overestimating costs thousands, but underestimating causes the pour to stop prematurely, ruining the structural integrity of the pad.

Why Anchor Annulus Matters

When retrofitting rebar dowels or anchor bolts into existing concrete, contractors drill a hole that is slightly wider than the bolt. This empty space—the ring between the bolt and the concrete—is called the Annulus.
