The Real-World Story: The Math Behind the Stairs

Staircases are arguably the most highly scrutinized structures in concrete framing. They rely on an ironclad mathematical rule: Every single riser must be exactly the same height. The human brain maps out the height of a step after the first two strides. If the mason miscalculates the total rise and makes the top step even 3/8ths of an inch taller or shorter than the rest, it creates a permanent "trip hazard." Building inspectors will fail the structure, forcing the contractor to demolish and re-pour the entire flight.

This calculator eliminates that risk. You enter the absolute floor-to-floor height and your "Target" riser height (usually around 7 inches or 175mm). The engine divides the height, calculates the nearest whole number of required steps, and perfectly recalculates the exact mathematical riser height down to the decimal point to ensure every step is identical.

Understanding the "Waist" Slab

When calculating concrete volume for stairs, amateurs often just calculate the volume of the triangular steps and add them up. This ignores the Waist Slab—the solid, angled ramp of structural concrete underneath the steps that holds the rebar grid and spans the gap between floors. The engine utilizes the Pythagorean theorem to calculate the hypotenuse length of the staircase, applying your selected waist thickness to generate a highly accurate volumetric yield for both the slab and the steps.

⚠️ Why This is for "Reference Only"

Landings Are Excluded: This calculator computes a single, straight flight of stairs. If your design includes an intermediate landing, you must calculate the volume of that flat slab separately. Formwork Deflection: Concrete is incredibly heavy. The plywood shuttering beneath the waist slab will inherently sag slightly under the hydrostatic pressure of the pour, consuming marginally more volume than pure mathematics dictate. The applied wastage factor helps cover this reality.
