The Real-World Story: Containing the Pour

Formwork is the temporary mold that holds the entire structural integrity of a building together while the concrete cures. When calculating material requirements, inexperienced managers often map out the exact geometric surface area of the concrete and order that exact amount of plywood. This leads to mid-pour disasters.

The Overlap Reality: Formwork cannot be built edge-to-edge. Plywood boards must overlap to create braced corners, they must be cut (wasting off-cuts), and they require extensions to tie into scaffolding. A typical site requires a 15% to 20% Gross Wastage Factor above the pure mathematical surface area to safely contain the hydrostatic pressure of wet concrete without blowing out.

How the Math Adapts to Structures

• Rectangular Columns: The math calculates the perimeter of the column multiplied by the clear height. (Top and bottom are not shuttered).
• Suspended Slabs: Calculations account for the massive bottom deck area, plus the thin perimeter edge thickness that must be contained.
• Beams: Beams are formed in a U-shape. The logic calculates the two deep side panels plus the bottom soffit, leaving the top open for the pour.

Repetition Factors: Standard 12mm or 18mm film-faced plywood can be reused multiple times (often 5 to 10 repetitions) if treated properly with shuttering oil. This tool calculates the total physical area deployed; your actual purchase volume may be lower if you are rotating boards through different zones.

Support Infrastructure: This calculator estimates the contact skin (plywood). It does not calculate the complex engineering required for the props, cuplock scaffolding, tie-rods, or timber walers required to prevent structural collapse.
